Windows xp/vista issues

Question

I formatted my hard drive before I changed from xp to vista, I saved a bunch of stuff on the previous operating sys. to cd's, now that I have vista installed I try and reinstall the info from the file cd's that I made and vista says that there is nothing on the cd, when I know that there is.
How can I get vista to extract the info that it claims isnt there
