I was wondering what canopy work meant ?

I might work at a vineyard so..

  1. The first answer basically sums it up.  Canopy work is the manipulation of the vegetative part of the vine (canes and leaves) to accoplish some goal.  Specific jobs falling under the heading could be:

    Vine trimming

    Leaf pulling

    Shoot thinning

    Shoot positioning (using wires)

    The science (or art) is very well described in the book "Sunlight Into Wine".  Forget the author, but you can find it easily on the web.

Canopy basically is the vine with leaves.  When you are growing a vine, vine needs to be trimmed and groomed to optimize both the number of branches (determining how concentrated the grape will be) as well as how the shade will be (to maximize sun exposure as well as to shade the grape).  Canopy work basically involves in working with the vine to groom it the right way and eventually getting the grapes in shape for picking.  Lots of hard work, but fun.
