IS it easy to clip the wings for a first timer or is it best that I take my budgie to a vet. And if I have to, how much does it normally cost?

  1. hi, i personally dont agree with cliping wings because they need there freedom, but if you must it dosnt bother me, you need to take your bird to a licenced avian expert/vet, they will do it there, like another answer said pet co and others have little experence at these things so dont take it there.

it usually costs $15 to $30

you need an expert because budgies have a balance in there wings, if too much is cut of they cant exactly balance when they stretch!

  2. i would suggest going to a petsmart or petco and have their groomer clip the wings and show you how to do it correctly, if you cut to short, they will bleed, and a bird can bleed out very quickly.

also if you cliip incorrectly, the bird will still have flight and you may lose it.

  3. As mentioned by others, take the bird to an avian vet (not a pet shop) and get them to clip the wings, show you how much and what feathers to clip for next time, and they will also be able to explain to you in detail about blood feathers, and how the different feathers can affect flight.

For example, sometimes you can leave a few extra feathers to give the bird a little bit more flight ability, but not enough to take off over a distance.

While your at the vet, he or she will also be able to tell you whether the bird is in good health, whether it has any parasites, and they can show you how to trim nails etc.

So you will get your moneys worth and be peace assured that you know how to clip them properly!

  4. It normally cost nothing but if it does maybe 15$, 20$

Maybe but usually it cost 0$

But no i wouldnt do it for a first timer see im a 10 year old. I hand raise baby cockatiels and i clip wings. With my om fo course. But yeah no i wudnt i did rele well since my uncle breeds cockatiels so i did good for a first timer of course i was supervised but yeah

    No vet is better

    Just incase

And if you clip it wrong. It can bleed to death.

  5. take it to the pet store. they clip wings, but NEVER take it to a store like petco or the pet stores where they have store all over the place. they have no experience. just watch the person cliping it. if you EVER cut a blood feather, YANK THAT FEATHER OUT! and apply preasure to the spot you yanked. if you don't take out that feather, you'll see your poor bird bleed until it dies. glad i could help!
