I can honestly say that Im still a little upset about the Wings trading him away. He was really starting to become a good player when he was traded away and only got better last year. 36 points in 43 games is pretty good and I think he is the type of player you can get for a real bargain. What do you think?

  1. ^^^^^^^^Grade "A" Tool.

I liked Williams too.  But as mentioned above, There really is no roster spot for him.  Now, Lang, I'm cool with getting rid of him.

  2. i dont really think the Wings have a roster spot for him. i liked him to. hes fast. but we have a bunch of kids that are comming up now

  3. Williams was good however why fix what isn't broken? Wings have way to much talent to take a chance of opening a space for him, Fillpulia,Frazen,Hudler,Helm,Cleary and Rafalski all are great players that shined bright for us this year if the Wings take a chance to change things around it could harm more than help, keeping a good flow with guys that have great chemistry with eachother is what they need and even if guys can come in and naturally connect with The Wings lines doesn't mean Williams can, plus i don't think he would see as much time as he would with a team that despreatly needs a boost of experinced youth

  4. No because he wont get the quality of ice time back here in detroit (powerplay..1st or 2nd line) that he did in chicago to even put those numbers up like he did , hes overpriced anyways and would much rather work with what we have in the farm system or free agency to find a 4th line center...theres simply no room anyway!!

  5. Whose spot on the Stanley Cup winning roster does he take? I don't care if he comes back or not, I always liked him. But you can't argue with success. Will he get 36 points playing in limited time like he would see in Detroit?

  6. No. He was OK, but why mess w/ a winning formula. They'd be better off using that money to try to keep Stuart and re-sign Zetterberg.

  7. I liked him a lot, I thought he was just hitting his stride when he got traded, and I would love for him to come back.  But where would we put him?  He wouldn't get as much ice time as he would like or deserve.  He would make the team stronger and join a good group of players, but I'm iffy about this one.  I don't want Detroit to get a good quality player, have nowhere to put him thus limiting his ice time, making him unhappy and looking for ice time elsewhere.

    That's where it gets ugly.

  9. NO!  There is a reason for why Holland traded Williams.  First of all, we dumped his $1.6M salary a little before the trade deadline in '07 in exchange for the then UFA-to-be in Kyle Calder (who we obviously did not re-sign last summer).  More importantly, trading Williams was the beginning of heading in the right direction in the transformation to build a Cup winner.  To further the transformation, after the loss against Anaheim, we did not re-sign Calder (who tore it up after he was traded, but disappeared in the playoffs), nor the floater Lang, nor the shadow of his former self Bertuzzi.  We also got a huge upgrade in Rafalski over Schneider.  Players like Kronwall, Franzen, Filppula and Hudler took on more prominent roles.  This year we also did not have to suffer injuries like we did in '07 with Schneider and Kronwall out.  But returning to Williams, he was a perimeter player who played with absolutely no grit and did not go to the front of the net to generate scoring chances.  Worse was that he was atrocious on the point on the second powerplay unit (even worse than Samuelsson) and a defensive liability at even strength as well.  Granted, he had decent hands and a hard shot, but his streakiness and lack of grit made him expendable.  Signing him now as a free agent would be a step backwards.  Besides, we have plenty of capable and more defensively-responsible secondary scorers in guys like Franzen, Filppula, Cleary, Hudler and Samuelsson.  In a way, Williams represents the Red Wings team that faced Edmonton in how we were a perimeter team and not willing to grind along the boards or dump the puck in; worse of all, we were often looking for that extra pass and unable to score dirty playoff-type goals.  These are all modifications we had to make in order to build on our puck-possession style of play so that we could be Cup champs in '08 and hopefully for many years to come.
