Does anyone know where the winged foot, the iconic symbol of track and field, came from?

  1. like the other person said its the symbol of hermes but i learned that hermes, the mesenger of the gods was the fastest of them all and is often depicted withe wings on the back of his ankles


  2. symbol of Hermes, patron god of all the gymnastic games of the Greeks.

    His sandals which carried the god across land and sea, were provided at the ankles with wings. Which is why one of his names was "Alipes" (Wing-footed). A wing-footed creature like the bat is an "aliped."
