Winky Wright believes it is about time to hang his gloves – Boxing News
After a devastating defeat by Peter Quillin, Winky Wright believes it is his time to call it quit. Hailing from St. Petersburg, Wright has had a troublesome career. He took three years off from the game and underwent a severe knee surgery. However, Wright
was confident that he will make his comeback against Quillin and prove his mettle, but it did not happen so. Quillin was younger and speedier and despite Wright’s best efforts, Quillin took the lead. Quillin won the show via unanimous decision, even though
Wright gave in his best heart and soul.
After the match, Wright announced his retirement saying, “I'm going to call it quits. If I can't be champ, I'm done. I'm not going to do this just to be fighting.”
When asked about Quillin’s performance, Wright said, “He definitely won the fight, no doubt at all. My timing was off. He fought a good fight, and he came prepared. I think I need to be at 154 if I fight again. He was quicker than I thought, and he was stronger
than I thought.”
Wright, who sounded quite disheartened, added, “I'm very proud. This was hard work for me. I threw a lot of punches and made him fight me. He was very smart and crafty. I had to watch for the shots.”
Some years back, Wright was being considered among the best junior middleweights. He had defeated some of the big names in the industry such as Felix Trindad, Ike Quartey, Shane Mosley and Bronco McKart. However, after his unexpected loss to Paul Williams,
Wright went on a decline. Since he was not getting any major fights, Wright decided to stay away from the sport for three years. This was Wright’s first match in the last five years, and unexpectedly he did better than expected.
For now, the once legendary fighter Winky Wright wants to call it off. According to Wright, there is no scope for him left in the sport. He takes pride in saying that he made his opponent ‘fight him back’, which he definitely did. Wright’s performance was
outstanding and with just another push he could have made it.
