Winky Wright furious and confused over fight being called off – Boxing News
Winky Wright, former undisputed jr. middleweight champion, finds himself confused regarding his fight against Peter Quillin being called off. Winky was scheduled or ‘rumoured’ to fight Peter Quillin on the Mayweather vs. Cotto undercard, but the fight has
been cancelled for now.
Initially, when this news surfaced, there were rumours of the Nevada commission not licensing Winky for the fight. However, on Thursday, Wright rejected all such hearsays saying he has no idea as to what has happened. Expressing his views, he said, “I talked
to [NSAC Executive Director] Keith [Kizer] and he told me that I had to come in and do every test that anyone else would have to do. He was cool. He wanted me to come back and he wanted to see me fight. For them to say that the commission wouldn't clear me,
they didn't even see me yet. How are they not going to clear me if they didn't see me yet? He couldn't tell me that I would be cleared, but he definitely didn't tell me that I wouldn't be cleared.”
Winky Wright is 40 with 51 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw in his portfolio. He has won 25 of his fights via knockout. Winky has not stepped in the ring since April 2009, after Paul Williams defeated him brutally. Today, he stands as a fighter who has not fought
in the last 3 years and probably is on the verge of retirement.
Previously, when the fight was accepted by Peter Quillin, Winky Wright had expressed his excitement for getting the opportunity to get in the ring once again. However, many analysts were of the view that it will be a one sided fight since Quillin is at his
career’s best spot whereas Wright is old and out of practice.
As of now, there is no news as to why the fight was cancelled. Winky is surely depressed about whatever has happened. He has said that he will not blame Quillin for the fight’s cancellation since Quillin was modest enough to accept the bout in the first
place. However, there are rumours that it was Quillin who must have found a better opponent.
