Winless in 2011, Ice Box hopes to make up for all the losses in the Classic as he works tough for Zito
Robert V. LaPenta’s 4-year-old colt, Ice Box is pointed toward the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic on 5 November, 2011, at Churchill Downs and to be in tip top condition the Pulpit colt is on the work tab with trainer Nicholas Zito at Saratoga.
With two dozen runners, Zito had his hands full after wet conditions postponed workout sessions at Oklahoma training track, and not knowing what tomorrow will bring, Zito didn’t take any chances on 18 October when he emptied his stable on the field.
Ice Box, who is winless in eight starts winning the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on 20 March, 2010, under jockey J Lezcano at about 1 1/8 miles.
Over the Gulfstream Park’s dirt course, Ice Box defeated Pleasant Prince and Rule to win the 1 1/8 mile long derby, and completed the distance in 1 minute and 49.19 seconds.
The son of Pulpit, out of Spice Island by Tabasco Cat, Ice Box went about half a mile in 47.96 seconds by himself, reaching his quarter in 23.93 seconds, as he galloped out five furlongs in 1 minute and 1.33 seconds, went six furlongs in 1 minute and 15.24 second, and seven eighths in 1 minute and 30.17 seconds.
The Kentucky bred Ice Box is coming off a seventh place finish in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.
The race was held on 1 October, 2011, and it was at about 1 ¼ miles over the Belmont Park’s dirt course, as Flat Out won the race, Drosselmeyer in second and Mike Repole and Todd Pletcher trained Stay Thirsty in third with the winning time of 2 minutes and 3.17 seconds.
Prior to the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Ice Box finished sixth in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on 3 September, 2011, over a distance of 1 1/8 miles. The race was won by the lone filly Havre de Grace, among all male cast with the winning time of 1 minute and 49.18 seconds.
It is worth taking a shot at the Classic, because possibly it could be Ice Box’s last race, and he did finish second in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs last year, which gives a little hope to Zito.
