Winnepeg in July? Opinions?

I just found out that I was excepted into a 5 week French program in Winnepeg... specifically at the St. Boniface University. Now I am what you westerners refer to as one of those "Ontarians" I CANT live without civilization, or malls. I lived in a small town for two years... and lets just say I'm never going back. I've looked at the St. Boniface University website but it wasn't helpful at all, all the useful links said "coming soon" I couldn't even see the DORM i'm staying in!

so what are your opinions on Winnepeg? Is it comparable to Toronto? or atleast Hamilton, Ontario??? Is there clubs, good shopping? please tell me all about it!

also if anyone has been to St. Boniface Uni, can you tell me about it?

Thanks <3333

  2. Winnipeg is a nice city. :) There are shopping malls, and it is civilized. ;)

Winnipeg doesnt compare to Toronto on many levels (some negative, some positive) but it is a good place. There is a lot of history to explore in Winnipeg, a lot around St Boniface. Check out the basilica de St Boniface which burned out in the late 1970s. Go to the Grey Nuns place. If you cross the bridge, you can go to a very eclectic area called The Forks. If you are there in July, go on a Splash Dash tour and see the mixing of the Red & Assiniboine Rivers. (something most Winnipeggers likely have never done) See the points of the floods we have had-most recently in 1997. Great shopping there for interesting things. Ye Old Spagetti Factory is awesome. So is the Celtic Shoppe on the 2nd floor of the Market.

Take in the Winnipeg Art Gallery, go to the Imax or the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Taste of Manitoba is down by the legislative buildings and us usually in July. Great way to see people, try out different food and have great entertainment. Also in the July is the Fringe Festival, which is theatre. Check out the Winnipeg Zoo.

Shopping..there are the big malls of Polo Park and St Vital Shopping Centres. (there are more-but those are my faves) If you want more specialty, try Osbourne Village, down Corydon Ave and Academy. While in Osbourne Village, MAKE SURE you go to Baked Expectations for the best desserts you will ever consume. :)

Clubs...I havent been to in years. ;) For a good "pub" you can try the Kings Head when you are at the Fringe Festival. Clubs, Tijunana Night Club was the place to be a few years ago; that is in the CanadInn Polo Park. Most CanadInns have the best nightclubs.

I havent been to St B U, but friends have taken the program you will be in. 20 years later they still rave about it...and speak better French than I do just taking it in school.

    Enjoy!
