Winner of 2011 JK Racing Asia Series to test for Caterham Team AirAsia in GP2 – GP2 news
The organisers of the GP2 series, AirAsia have announced that the winner of the 2011 JK Racing Asia Series will get a chance to run a test for Caterham Team AirAsia in GP2 prior to the 2012 Formula 1 season.
David Sonenscher, chief of Motorsport Asia said, “I am very happy to be able to announce this award which comes about through our collaboration with AirAsia. This will be a great opportunity for one of the young aspiring future Formula 1 stars, currently
racing in our JK Racing Asia Series.”
This the first season of the 2011 JK Racing Asia Series which began on April 9, 2011 in Sepang and is due to end on October 30 in India. It is the eighth season of Formula BMW racing in the Asian subcontinent.
The whole concept of JK Racing Asia Series is built on encouraging fresh Asian talent in karting, with a mission to promote Formula 1 sport in the Subcontinent where the latter is perhaps not as popular as it is in Europe or other parts of the world.
This reward will serve not only as a great motivation factor for the drivers to win the JK Racing Series championship title so that they can get the opportunity to test with one of the GP2 teams, but also will give them a heads up on what Formula 1 is all
about.
Tony Fernandes, AirAsia CEO and Team Lotus boss added, “At AirAsia we believe in making dreams a reality, and our extensive involvement in motorsports, from our Driver's Development Program with Team Lotus and Team Lotus itself, amongst others, allows us
to continually be a part of the growth of our youth as they pursue their future.”
Currently, Lucas Auer is topping the series with 176 points to his credit. The 17-year-old Austrian is at a 24-point advantage over his rival Afiq Ikhwan.
Let’s see who steals the 2011 JK Racing Asia Series Championship title this season and manages to get a taste of the GP2 series.
