Winner of A9 greyhound race at Oxford is a Collie
Over the years, there have been many famous dogs in the world. Names like Benji, Rin Tin Tin, Old Yeller, and even Lassie the Collie often come to mind when discussing canine celebrities.
In the world of greyhound racing, there are many celebrity dogs that delight racing fans with their superb sprinting skills every day. The Oxford Greyhound Stadium in Oxford is home to some of them.
The day of 450m racing at Oxford began with an A9 race that saw 2-1 favourite Collie pull off a close victory with a strong 28.24 finish. Collie held an early pace from trap five, and
would later lead the run in to make the victory his. Finishing just ¾ lengths behind the winner was Next Champ (5-1), who ran on well to claim second place in 28.30.
Third-place finisher Halsters Boy (4-1) held an early pace, and went on to challenge and crowd third. He completed the race in 28.36, which placed him ¾ lengths out of second place.
Fourth place went to Springville Rest (5-2), who ran to a 28.40 finish. He was only a ½ length out of a top-three finish. Rooskey Rascal (6-1) took fifth place after some slight crowding
at third. Her finishing time of 28.48 was a single length behind Springville Rest. The last-place finisher was Sorrell Lass (4-1), who crowded first on the way to a 28.52 finish that put her a ½ length out of fifth place.
Call It Mylene (6-1) called in a victory with a nice finish in the A8 race that followed. An early pace from trap four led her to a terrific finishing time of 27.94. Phuket, the 9-4 favourite,
was 1½ lengths behind the winner, and finished strong in 28.06 to claim second place. The third position went to Bridgets Love (6-1), who finished the race in 28.81, which was 1½ lengths behind Phuket.
Abelia (3-1) crowded third, but recovered quickly to run on to a fourth-place finish in 28.30. Had she not lost 1½ lengths in the process, a finish in the top three might have been hers.
An early pace was not enough for Blondies Paddy (6-1), as he finished the race in fifth place. His time of 28.30 was a shoulder’s lengths behind Abelia.
Bringing up the rear was Power Phil (5-2), whose power ran out after he crowded the first bend and third. He would go on to finish in 28.54, which was 3 lengths behind fifth place.
Collie and Call It Mylene will be looking to hold on to their celebrity status as champions at Oxford Greyhound Stadium when the races resume on Saturday, October 9. The first race is
scheduled to get under way at 19:25.
