Winners seem unpredicatible at the Ladbrokes.com Derby Plate: second round heats

Hosting four second round heats, the Shelbourne Park Ladbrokes.com Derby Plate will start at 20:18, with the last of the 550 yard heats beginning at 21:00.

Kingo and Royal Tornado currently sit at 9-4 and will be running from the fourth and fifth traps respectively. Kingo has yet to win in a 550-yard race, while Tornado hasn’t won a race since July 24. Joint favorites in the first round of their heat last week, Tornado finished two spots ahead of Kingo. Ballyfeard Brave sits at 3-1 from the first trap, and after finishing 1 ½ lengths behind Ned From Donard, is looking decent. Nighthawk Boy currently sits at 5-1, while Headleys Jake and Mustang Johnny are both longshots at 10-1. But don’t expect either to compete in this race as they both barely made it into the second round.

The second heat should be much closer than the first. Looking great last week after winning his first round heat over Royal Tornado by 5 1/3 lengths, Dartrey Spring sits as the current favourite at 2-1, while Baytown Boss sits at 5-2 after taking the lead early last week but finishing fourth. Three One Three, Judicial Academy, and Kerrydale Farloe are all sitting at 5-1. Of the 5-1 hounds, only Kerrydale Farloe won his heat last week. Coolcastle Jet is coming in at 8-1 from the first trap. Jet finished second in his heat last week, and currently stands as the longshot in this race. His first trap draw may end up making this race the most exciting of the second round heats.

The third heat has 2-1 Skywalker Queen racing from the fifth trap. Westmean Bolt, in the first trap, and Ned From Donard are both sitting at 5-2. These three should have little difficulty holding off the rest of the group to claim the top three spots. If one of them does get pushed out, look for Ballymac Mitsy at 6-1 to be doing the pushing. Mitsy probably won’t place close to first but she could upset one of the favourites. This group will also see two longshots, Tyrur Lucky and Hold On Buddy. Appropriately, Lucky will need a lot of luck at 10-1, and Buddy will probably be able to hold on to sixth spot at 20-1.

The fourth and final heat will see Cartiers Dazzle race from the third trap. Dazzle led for the first three quarters of her heat last week, only to give up the lead and lose to Westmead Bolt by a neck. Kiowa Myth, currently at 5-2, will go from the second trap, and St Louis Spirit at 3-1 will be coming out of the sixth trap. Spirit came out of the sixth trap last week and overcame the leader on the first bend, going on to win the heat over Coolcastle Jet by 5 ½ lengths. Slippery Dave will have a tough time finishing in the top three out of the fourth trap.  Longshots Tyrur Dougie at 10-1 and Black Paws Down at 16-1 will most likely be nothing to worry about.
