“Winning is all that matters, margin of 7, 1 or 25 points is least important” says Fernando Alonso
The Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso dismisses all the gossips regarding how many points he must win with. The Spanish driver proclaimed that all he is looking for at the moment is to bag the third world championship of his career, and he is not concerned
if he wins by seven points or more.
The last round of the season is scheduled to take place this Sunday, in Abu Dhabi Grand, which marks the 19th and the last round of the 2010 Formula One calendar.
Alonso’s second victory of the season at the German Grand Prix was granted to him by his teammate, Felipe Massa due to Ferrari’s team orders. Although the team got a U.S $ 100,000 penalty by the German stewards yet no points were deducted from any of the
team drivers. Many of the other teams as well as the analysts believe that the additional seven points earned by Alonso should have been deducted from the driver for FIA has strictly forbidden team orders.
Now, as the Ferrari driver stands at the top of the points’ tally, it has been announced by many of the Formula One people that in case he bags victory with an advantage of seven points or less, it will be very disappointing for the other teams as well as
for the Formula One fans.
The former FIA principal, Max Mosley also commented earlier this month that Alonso’s triumph by seven points or less will ‘devalue’ the Drivers’ Championship of this season.
Moreover, the title defender, Jenson Button exclaimed a few days back, "I just hope if he wins it then he does so by more than seven points. Some will be disappointed with what happened at Hockenheim and question whether he deserves it. I don't care who
wins it really."
Dismissing all such comments the Ferrari driver said that any such gossips do not de-motivate him. He is only looking forward for crossing the finishing line in Abu Dhabi ahead of his rivals.
While talking to the media this Thursday the two times world Champion said, "I think winning by 7, 1 or 25 is the least important thing in my mind now. I think we will still see how Friday goes, how Saturday goes as to how we approach the race on Sunday.
I think it will depend on how the weekend is going. We will change the tactics depending on how competitive we are or which positions we are."
He further continued saying that everybody in the team is really high spirited and is aiming for a first or at the worst, a second place finish, which is all they mathematically require to win the championship. He also added that at this stage the practice
sessions on Friday and eventually the Saturday’s qualifying is very important. The Spaniard believes that the better he would perform on Saturday, higher would be his probability to win.
He very firmly stated that his aspiration for Saturday is the pole and finally seeing the chequered flag ahead of all on Sunday.
Alonso further stated that the margin of points is not only about how well he does on the race day, rather it depends upon the performance of the other top rivals.
Well, even if he wins the championship or not, or by how big a margin he wins, the fact that he has given an exceptionally brilliant fight on the track all through the season. The driver emerged after a lulled mid-season and very soon made his place to the
top of the tally from his initial 5th place. Now, as the drivers move forward for the last episode of an unforgettable season, the caches of the driver are surely higher than all the other contenders.
