It's an accumulator bet, also know as 'All Up'... basically he selected the winners of 8 horse races, put 50p on the first one, when that won, all the winnings went on the next race, win that and all those winnings then go on the next horse - do that for 8 races in a row on horses at decent odds and it's no surprise he's a million quid richer.
