Winnipeg Jets' AHL affiliate franchise unveils new name and logo –NHL offseason Update
Days after Winnipeg's new franchise, Winnipeg Jets, unveiled its logo following the revelation of their decision to keep the original Jets name, its affiliate franchise in the American Hockey League (AHL), announced its new name, St. John’s IceCaps along
with a new team logo.
St. John IceCaps' President and Chief Executive Officer, Danny Williams, made the announcement on Friday, July 29, about renewing the former Manitoba Moose team.
"I am so pleased to present the St. John's IceCaps and our new logo to fans, as we begin a new era of professional hockey in the province", IceCaps' CEO, Danny Williams, said in a press release. "The IceCaps is a name that I am confident hockey fans will
support as it captures both our rich hockey history with a reference to the Caps, while at the same time capturing a natural element that is iconic for the province, ice. We wanted to ensure that, although the team is based in our capital city, the province
as a whole can identify with it and embrace it as their own".
True North Sports and Entertainment was the group behind relocating the National Hockey League (NHL) now former franchise, Atlanta Thrashers, to the city of Winnipeg, which has longed to have a hockey team in their locality.
Over 15 years ago, the Jets team was dissolved which deprived them of true Canadian heritage up until now.
With the return of a new and rejuvenated Jets' team, St. John’s also got back some of the action as the Winnipeg AHL team, formerly known as Manitoba Moose, relocated to the small city of Canada.
The name, IceCaps, basically is a denotation of Canadian heritage and what the hockey loving country is known for, and that is snow and being a cold place.
According to the creators of the teams’ new logo, the design features a jagged mountain, which relates to the Newfoundland and Labrador province and praises their rugged landscape and snow-capped mountains.
All things aside, Manitoba Moose was formerly the affiliate of Vancouver Canucks, but being part of history, now they are with the new Winnipeg Jets, which according to team President, Danny William, is an honour of its own.
