Winnipeg Jets desperate for victory as they host Dallas Stars – NHL Preview
Washington Capitals have done quite well to secure a spot among the top eight teams of National Hockey League (NHL) Eastern Conference. They have been even better in terms of retaining that position.
Capitals’ surge has certainly come as setback for the Winnipeg Jets, who are still in the playoff contention, but are not among the top eight teams of the conference.
On the other hand, Dallas Stars will quite easily qualify for the postseason now, thanks to their incredible run in this month.
As these sides prepare to face each other on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at MTS Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Jets are desperate for a victory, which would still keep them in the playoff hunt.
Let’s have a look at both teams.
Jets
Jets have played four games this month. They got victories in the first two, which were played on their home ice, but the last two, which were on road, did not help their cause.
Jets were defeated by Vancouver Canucks (3-2) and Calgary Flames (5-3).
In the last game, Flames took a three-goal advantage in the first period, but Jets managed to reduce the deficit to only one goal by the end of the same period.
Flames, however, increased the lead in the second period and both teams scored apiece in the final as Flames got the victory.
Jets’ left wing, Evander Kane, said after the game:
"We outshot them, we had over 40 shots, we got pucks to the net, but their goalie made some key saves. We gave up three goals on the power play, too, gave up five goals collectively; it's tough to win hockey games that way."
Jets are ranked at 10th spot in the Eastern Conference with 72 points after 69 games and are six points behind the eighth-ranked Capitals.
Stars
They have played six games this month without losing any and are ranked at third spot in the Western Conference with 83 points after 70 games.
Stars defeated Minnesota Wild in their last game and goaltender, Kari Lehtonen, got his second straight shutout.
Jamie Benn, who scored the only goal of the game in the final period, said after the victory:
"In the end, we got two points and that's what we came here for. We're not trying to make it pretty out there. We're trying to keep it ugly, play a simple game and that's why we're successful right now.”
Predictions
Stars have an edge.
The sum of goals scored by both teams might be six or above.
If Jets win, the winning margin will be two or more goals.
