Winnipeg Jets force overtime, win against Florida Panthers in shootout 4-3 -NHL Match Update
Evander Kane came out strong for Winnipeg by forcing an overtime extension during the final minute of regulation and allowed the Jets to take the match after two straight successful shots in overtime to overpower the Florida Panthers, 4-3, Monday night,
October 31, 2011, at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, United States.
Ondrej Pavelec might have fell short for Winnipeg after allowing two straight goals during the final period when they were crucial to saving the Jets from a loss, but being outshot 42-31 throughout the contest obviously took its toll. Pavelec still managed
to block 39 of those shots and stopped two of Florida’s first attempts, powering the Jets to take the match.
Winnipeg has certainly had an up and down month which began with three straight losses to kick off the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season. Winnipeg came out determined to win against the Philadelphia Flyers, 9-8, but lost the following
game in a shutout to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Ending the month off with a shootout victory against Florida, the Jets sit tied with the New Jersey Devils for the 12th position in the Eastern Conference with nine points.
Kyle Wellwood opened the scoring with his fifth of the season off a pass by captain, Andrew Ladd, followed by Evander Kane’s first of the night while capitalising on a power play opportunity with Florida missing Scottie Upshall due to being called for elbowing.
Nearly 10 minutes later with 20 seconds remaining in the opening period, Jason Garrison finally put the Florida Panthers on the scoreboard with his fifth goal, giving Florida hope of a comeback in the upcoming periods.
Tomas Fleischmann levelled the game 3:13 into the third while Tomas Fleischmann potted what seemed at the moment as the insurance goal to secure the match for Florida during a power play opportunity at the 17:50 mark.
It was Kane who miraculously made the equaliser at 19:10, with 50 seconds to go for his second goal of the night and forced an overtime extension.
Florida missed on both of their first attempts during the shootout on Pavelec, but Andrew Ladd and Kyle Wellwood capitalised on their final two shots to take the match.
