Winnipeg Jets get second straight win over Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Overtime -NHL Update
Getting out of regulation has been the key to winning for Winnipeg these past few games as the Jets managed to edge the Tampa Bay Lighting, 2-1, in overtime on Thursday night, February 2, 2012, at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa, Florida, United States.
Winnipeg’s last matchup was against the Philadelphia Flyers during a shootout, which they barely won with the same score, making them lucky as soon as the game heads out of regulation.
The Jets managed to keep Tampa Bay totally out of the net during the overtime extension as Winnipeg had two shots, out of which one was successful, while Lightning failed to get a single attempt, thus failing to score.
Tampa Bay Lightning head coach, Guy Boucher, was frustrated at the point where a number of his players had quality chances throughout the first three periods but missed on each and every one.
"Their goaltender stoned us, basically," Boucher said talking about Winnipeg goalie, Ondrej Pavelec. "We had tons of quality, quality scoring chances and we couldn't bury them."
After a scoreless opening period, Blake Wheeler of the Winnipeg Jets, kicked off the scoring by grabbing his 10th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season with 16 seconds remaining in the second.
Victor Hedman managed to get the crowd off their seats with the equaliser midway through the final period which gave them another chance in overtime, but failed to capitalise on the opportunity as Winnipeg’s defence came into form and kept the Lightning way out.
"I'm frustrated, but if we don't deserve it then we don't deserve it," Boucher said after Tampa Bay failed to grab their sixth straight win and went back to square one. "The coaches were unanimous in thinking we deserved this game, but it didn't turn our way. It's disappointing, but we picked up another point and we have to move forward."
Kyle Wellwood made the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in overtime, securing the Winnipeg Jets position as the 10th place in the East ahead of 11th place Tampa Bay Lightning.
Jets will be staying in Florida to play against Panthers on Friday while Tampa Bay has the next at home against Panthers a day later on Saturday.
