Winnipeg Jets lose second straight as Edmonton Oilers dominate 5-3 -NHL Update
Winnipeg is finally back in the playoff race as they managed to slip into eighth place in the Eastern Conference but now having lost two straight, the Jets position gets weaker every day as the Edmonton Oilers dominated 5-3, Monday night, February 27, 2012,
at the sold-out MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The 15,000 plus crowd was definitely charged in Winnipeg as they hope to see their team make the playoffs in their first season in the city, but if Jets continue the way they are, it might be difficult in the upcoming days.
"You can tell that this was an important two points [to Winnipeg]," Edmonton's Taylor Hall said. "The atmosphere in this building was playoff-like. You could tell that was a playoff atmosphere, and they were trying to play a playoff-type game, because they
really needed those two points."
Winnipeg got off to a good start in the second period after a scoreless first as Kyle Wellwood got his 13th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season with five minutes left to go.
Ryan Whitney came right back with an added man advantage goal of his own to level the contest at the 18:13 mark, but Alex Burmistrov was right there to take the lead yet again for the home team at 19:27.
Edmonton took over the third and final period by rallying with four goals back-to-back as Ryan Jones, Lennart Petrell, Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, all contributed to take the lead to a 5-2 at the 17:34 mark.
"I liked the way we handled the game in general," Edmonton coach, Tom Renney. "It was a bit of a track meet at times, naturally, but certainly being able to come out and really go to work in the third period to put it away was important to us."
Nik Antropov added Winnipeg’s third of the night on a power play with 1:10 remaining but the home team failed to respond after that.
Edmonton might not have any hope of a playoff spot but that does not mean they are quitting. The Oilers will be hosting St. Louis Blues on Wednesday while Winnipeg Jets face Florida Panthers at home on Thursday.
