Winnipeg Jets lose top forward Evander Kane due to concussion -NHL Update
Some bad news for the Winnipeg Jets, who have already been struggling a lot in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, lost their top forward, Evander Kane, due to concussion woes that the team is taking on a day-to-day basis instead of
hurrying the delicate issue.
Concussions are something that have been haunting the NHL despite the numerous steps taken by the league in avoiding such incidents that would lead to players facing these types of injuries, which have become sudden season enders.
Kane, a 20-year-old left winger from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, who was picked up by the Atlanta Thrashers as their fourth overall pick during round-one of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, is currently in the final year of his entry-level contract with
the converted Winnipeg Jets.
He has a $3.1 million annual salary cap hit, which consists of a $900,000 annual salary and $2.2 million addition in potential bonuses.
Winnipeg announced the news earlier on Saturday, January 21, 2012, after the player came with a complaint about having a headache which came out to be a concussion.
"Evander Kane came to us (Friday) with a headache. We weren't sure what it was because we've had the flu come through a couple of guys", said head coach, Claude Noel. "We sent him home and wanted to make sure we got an evaluation on him. We got him evaluated
and it looks like he has a concussion. He's feeling better today. We're going to play it day by day and see how he's doing”.
He missed their game against the Florida Panthers due to going through the medical concussion protocol, which has told him to stay out after being cleared, which is expected to take a week or even more depending on the recovery time procedure.
"It's part of the game, it's another injury. Is it going to be a few days, is it going to be a few weeks? But I'll handle that the same way with everything else. We have what we have", added Noel.
Evander Kane has played in 46 games with Winnipeg this season and has 31 points (18 goals, 13 assists) along with 35 penalty minutes.
