Winnipeg Jets newly acquired defenseman Dustin Byfuglien arrested for drunk-boating –NHL News Update
After being selected as the 245th overall draft pick during round-eight of the 2003 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by Chicago Blackhawks, Dustin Byfuglien turned out to be one of those players that really shine even though they are selected
near the end.
Playing the position of defence, Byfuglien had a mishap on Wednesday at night when he was arrested by Minneapolis Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office deputy on duty for Lake Minnetonka for boating while being under the influence of alcohol and spent nearly
three hours in jail overnight on Wednesday.
It was also learnt that the 26-year-old forward declined to give a blood or urine test when approached by the police officials, thus, resulting in him being booked for probable cause on intoxicated boating.
Byfuglien proved his worth overtime during the last year of his entry-level contract with his original draft team which resulted them in signing him on for another three years at $9 million.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States native, was traded after the 2009-2010 season concluded along with the last year of his contract being sent on to Atlanta Thrashers, a team with whom he put up career high record numbers.
Last season, Byfuglien potted an impressive 53 points (20 goals, 33 assists) in 81 games played, which became the factor for him being signed on for a whopping $26 million over the duration of five years with Winnipeg Jets.
Winnipeg fans are certainly looking forward to the young forward performing as good or even better with their newly shifted team but with recent events that took place, have become afraid that this might get in the way of things.
“He’s one of the big stars everyone is talking about”, Dave Dupont, a Jets fan wearing one of the team’s new sweatshirts, said after the arrest began making headlines. “I hope it doesn’t affect our season — him being suspended or any reaction from the league.
I hope it can be dealt with outside of hockey”.
The investigation is still in process by both the law enforcement authorities and Winnipeg Jets management. It is a matter of time until a final decision is announced.
