Winnipeg Jets rally in third to deny Philadelphia Flyers 6-4 -NHL Match Update
Winnipeg is slowly fending off all the bad omens and winning back-to-back as they shot down the rowdy Philadelphia team as the Jets rallied in the first period to take over the Flyers, 6-4, Saturday night, November 19, 2011, at the sold-out MTS Centre in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
With their newly gained confidence, the Philadelphia Flyers realised that the Winnipeg team is not one which can be easily messed with anymore.
"Against a team like that, that's playing with confidence and moving the puck around, you're going to get behind," Flyers captain Chris Pronger said after the matchup which gave Winnipeg their third straight win. "We let them get off to a great start and
they kind of coasted in from there.”
Bryan Little scored two straight back-to-back in the first period to give the Jets a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes of game-play. His first came on an early power play opportunity as Philadelphia was called for too many men on the ice.
Winnipeg captain, Andrew Ladd, extended the lead even further on their third straight power play advantage, this time with the Flyers losing Danny Briere for unsportsmanlike conduct midway through the first period while Scott Hartnell put in Philadelphia’s
first on their first added man opportunity.
"It's frustrating," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said of his team's play. "We shot ourselves in the foot for the first half of the game anyway. They were quicker to the pucks and more disciplined."
Jim Slater answered against for the Jets at the 5:49 mark of the second period shorthanded on a breakaway opportunity, followed by Dustin Byfuglien while taking advantage of another power play.
Scott Hartnell potted his second of the night after Winnipeg lost, Tanner Glass, due to delaying the game.
Just like when it looked as Winnipeg had won, Philadelphia countered with two more goals straight as Matt Read brought the visitors within one of the score, but it was Winnipeg’s, Nik Antropov, who scored the insurance goal with less than two minutes remaining.
Winnipeg Jets are eyeing a fourth straight victory when they kick off their three-game road trip against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday while Philadelphia has the next at home against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.
