Winnipeg Jets re-sign Kyle Wellwood in a one-year deal worth $1.6 million –NHL Update
Canadian forward, Kyle Wellwood, has re-signed a deal with Winnipeg Jets of the Southeast Division of National Hockey League’s (NHL) Eastern Conference, after playing for them for one previous season (2011-2012).
Wellwood signed a one-year deal which is worth $1.6 million, as reported by capgeek.com. His previous year’s deal was worth $700,000, which was less than half amount of the new deal.
The 29-year-old was obviously very happy with the deal and hoped that he would get where he was very early in his career and improve more. He said, "For me to finally have a summer here where I'm able to prepare like you're supposed to for a hockey season
and not have any injuries is great. I hope to get back where I was real early in my career."
Since free agency opened on the 1st of July, Winnipeg Jets had already signed three players so Wellwood is the fourth player Winnipeg Jets have signed in last 15 days. Other three players signed by Winnipeg Jets are goaltender Alvaro Al Montoya,
Olli Jokinen and Alexei Ponikarovsky.
Wellwood also said that it would be great to play with all the new teammates, players Winnipeg Jets have signed in this new season and it would good to start the pre-season and train at the place he is already familiar with. He said, "I'm excited about the
signings they've had and way the team's going. It's going to be a good summer of getting prepared to improve."
Windsor, Ontario born forward also told that he was actually offered a two-year contract but he opted to sign just for one-year. “It comes down to my fitness level. Claude (Noel) used me really well last year, but he couldn't use me more because I wasn't
as productive when he tried to increase my minutes.”, Wellwood said.
Kyle Wellwood had started his NHL career with Toronto Maple Leafs in the season 2003-2004, where he played 189 games until 2007-2008 season and scored 31 goals, giving 77 assists, earning him total of 108 points. Then his next team was Vancouver Canucks
for which he played in the next two season (2008-2009, 2009-2010) and then the 2010-2011 season with San Jose Sharks before moving to his present team Winnipeg Jets.
