Winnipeg Jets re-sign Sweden’s defenseman Tobias Enstrom in a five-year deal for $28.75 million
Winnipeg Jets of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) have signed their alternative captain and defenseman, Toby Enstrom, giving him an extension of five-years.
The contract is worth $28.75 million for five years, which means $5.75 million per year.
The Swedish professional player is also given an increment of more than 50% from his previous contract, which was a four-year deal one, worth $15 million, having an average of $3.75 million every year.
He had signed his previous contract with Atlanta Thrashers in 2009 season but played just three seasons with them, before he was traded to Winnipeg Jets.
27-year-old, Enstrom had started his career in 2000 with his own country’s junior hockey league, J20 SuperElit, where he played for Modo Hockey for three years, before moving to country’s senior elite hockey league, Elitserien hockey league.
Nordingra, Sweden’s native was drafted 239th overall in the 2003 NHL draft by Atlanta Thrashers but was not given an entry-level contract until 2007. And made his debut in the same season, after which he never looked back and kept moving forward.
He played all of the 82 games, not missing even a single game for three straight seasons.
At 5-feet-10 inches, he is one of the shorter players of the league and was traded to Winnipeg Jets in 2011 season and had a good season with them, scoring six goals, 27 assists and 33 total points in 62 games played.
In a conference call held from his hometown, Sweden, Enstrom said that he wanted to stay at Winnipeg and he appreciates that they believed in him. He is also looking forward to coming years and improving his performance as he said,
"I wanted to stay and they believe in me, which I really appreciate. They want me to stay. It went pretty quick. We got this agreement in a short time. I'm happy to be a Winnipeg Jet and I'm looking forward to all the years coming up here."
He also told that he likes everything about the team and that is one of the reason that he signed with the team as he further added,
“I like our defense, I like our goaltending, I like everything about this team. That’s one of the reason’s I signed. I believe in this team, and I think this year coming up is really important for us.”
