Winnipeg Jets receive Eric Fehr for Danick Paquette, 2012 Entry Draft pick –NHL offseason Update
Finally, Eric Fehr, the 25-year-old right wing from Winkler, Manitoba, Canada, can move a little closer to his original hometown after he was traded to Winnipeg Jets from Washington Capitals for minor league forward Danick Paquette and a fourth-round, entry
draft pick in 2012.
After six seasons over the border with teams like Washington and their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, Hershey Bears, along with Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL) prior to that, Fehr is going to be returning home for a while.
Fehr so far, is having mixed emotions over the issue.
"I'm definitely excited, and a little bit sad at the same time", Fehr said during a conference call later Friday. "This is my first time being traded, so I have mixed emotions, but to be able to come back to Winnipeg and be able to play as close to my hometown
as I am, it's going to be a great feeling".
Drafted as the 18th overall pick during round-one of the 2003 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by Washington, Fehr has played 230 games with Capitals until now, including a record of 93 points (46 goals, 47 assists) and an accumulated
plus-minus rating of 33.
He played three seasons with Hershey Bears in a total of 121 games and tallying 101 points (50 goals, 51 assists).
He has not played with the AHL affiliate since the 2007-2008 season.
Newly appointed general manager of Winnipeg Jets' team, Kevin Cheveldayoff was all praise for Fehr.
“Eric has played within a very deep Washington organization and from the type of player he was coming out of junior to where he’s at in his career, he’s still a young player”, said Jets' general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff.
Fehr is still playing through his $2.2 million contract and will become a restricted free agent come July 1, 2012.
It will be exciting to see how Fehr is able to perform with the new Canadian franchise which is not only being closely watched by fans in Canada, but throughout the world as well.
His performance next season will be the determining factor is Jets want to retain him or not.
