Winnipeg Jets strengthen playoff position with 3-1 win over Buffalo Sabres -NHL Update
Winnipeg continues to prove that their certainly serious about the playoffs in their first official National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as the Jets. Buffalo had only one goal against Winnipeg as the Jets rallied to dominate Sabres, 3-1, Monday night,
March 5, 2012, at the sold-out MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Jets were playing their first game since the start of the month as they completely shutout Florida Panthers, 7-0, on March 1, and did not seem to lose any of that momentum coming into a contest against Buffalo.
Victory against Sabres signalled the end of their eight-game home stand as they now will kick off a two-game road trip against Canadian rivals and Western Conference leaders, Vancouver Canucks, on Thursday.
Buffalo still sits at number 11 in the East while Winnipeg strengthened their playoff position as the eighth place team with 72 points, three ahead of ninth spot Washington Capitals.
Captain of the home team, Andrew Ladd, potted the opening goal of the night 13:45 into the first period for his 21st of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season. Ladd has definitely been one of the factors in the Jets major increase in performance during
the past few weeks.
Corey Tropp tried bringing Buffalo back with his equaliser having 35 seconds remaining in the second period but Winnipeg had different plans on mind.
Blake Wheeler made the crucial tie-breaker at 8:02 while Chris Thorburn secured the contest a little over two minutes later, allowing Winnipeg to easily take the match.
Winnipeg stuck to their game plan of taking as many shots as possible, outshooting the competition 31-24 as Buffalo’s veteran goalie fell short on three for 28 saves in total. Ondrej Pavelec faced 24 shots and let only one pass.
Sabres were on a three-game winning streak of their own entering the contest as they hope to secure a postseason spot with the playoffs closing in.
Seeing how Buffalo had won against Vancouver coming to Winnipeg, Jets could possible take down the Canucks in their next matchup.
Sabres will be returning home in order to host Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.
