Winnipeg Jets win second of season against Carolina Hurricanes -NHL Match Update
Winnipeg might have brought about just as much disappointment as it did enthusiasm before the season because of their sluggish performance thus far, but are gradually adjusting to the National Hockey League (NHL) as the Jets won their second match over the
Carolina Hurricanes, 5-3, on Saturday, October 22, at a sold-out MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Carolina Hurricanes on the other hand were on a three game winning streak before having it snapped by the St. Louis Blues in overtime on Friday, losing again to Winnipeg for the second time.
"I thought we did a really nice job", Jets coach, Claude Noel, said of shutting down Carolina's late rally. "There was a real urgency to win the game, which is what we needed to win the game".
Carolina had got off to a good start as Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Skinner scored two straight to put the Hurricanes ahead nearly two minutes apart. Winnipeg Jets did not fail to answer back in all regards as they scored two of their own by Alex Burmistrov and
Kyle Wellwood, both on power plays.
Wellwood’s goal especially wowed the crowd by making the equaliser with less than two seconds remaining to beat the buzzer signalling the end of the first period.
Winning shone in the second 20 minute round as Jim Slater, captain Andrew Ladd and Evander Kane scored three straight on the Carolina net through Hurricanes goalie, Brian Boucher.
Seeing that Boucher failed to block three consecutive Winnipeg goals, Carolina Hurricanes coach, Paul Maurice, did not hold him responsible and termed it rather a failure of the entire team to stop the opposing players from reaching their net.
"I don't think anything was going for him tonight", Maurice said of Boucher. "We didn't do him any favours".
Skinner set up Tuomo Ruutu nearly midway through the final period to make a comeback into the game, but failed to contribute anymore during the remaining 11 minutes of regulation.
"Mason was good. It's not easy coming into these situations", Noel said taking about their goalie. "He hasn't played a lot. He's going to get another start in the next couple of games. He's a real battler. He did a great job for us".
Winnipeg stays home for one more game against New York Rangers on Monday before taking off for a three-game road trip. Carolina will look to bring back the momentum against Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
