Winter Meetings barely promising for the Cincinnati Reds – MLB News
Plans did not shape up as was hoped; objectives remained unfulfilled.
The Winter Meetings came to close on Thursday, December 6 and the Cincinnati Reds could not quite get what they were looking for. Their aim was to add a leadoff hitter coupled with re-signing the free-agent Ryan Ludwick.
"We came here with great anticipation and optimism on doing certain things. When they don't work out, it's a little disappointing. But we're certainly not through with trying to improve the club. This was such an odd Winter Meetings, very odd,” said general manager Walt Jocketty.
But that aim was hardly accomplished. The Reds have yet to re-sign the free agent, let alone bringing in the leadoff hitter. Walt Jocketty stated that Ryan Ludwick is contemplating some things.
"The agent said he spoke to Ryan last night, and he's still contemplating some things I guess," Jocketty said before departing Nashville on Thursday. "Two years is not a problem. It's not the issue."
The Winter Meetings did not seem to have a lot to offer for the Reds. They might not expressed their intention either to go for any big deal. But if the history is anything to go by, this is how it has always been for the club with regards to Winter Meetings.
The past year they did not add any big name to the roster either during the Winter Meetings. But late in December, they traded the likes of Mat Latos and Sean Marshall. Any such thing this time round, however, does not seem imminent.
Jocketty also spoke about other teams. Like said earlier, there does not seem to be any deal in the offing. "We've had some talks with clubs that really haven't gone anywhere this week," Jocketty said. "We'll stay in touch, but I don't think anything is imminent."
With a backup infielder and some leadoff spot to be filled, the Reds will have to have a wait-and-see approach now. Any significant move is not anticipated since there is no big name available now, but it is likely that the Reds have the roster filled before Spring Training.
