Winter Memories to continue having a good 2011, when she goes for the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes
The 3-year-old James Toner trained filly Winter Memories has had an amazing 2011 season where she has gone on to win at Keeneland, Saratoga and Belmont Park, and the filly is making a return to Keeneland again where she landed her first win of the season, in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes.
The race will commence on 15 October, 2011, at Keeneland and if she goes on to win the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes, it is highly likely she will run in the Breeders’ Cup.
The stellar year for the daughter of El Prado, out of Memories of Silver by Silver Hawk, started at Keeneland, where she participated in the Grade 3 Appalachian Stakes over at a distance of 1 mile.
On 21 April, 2011, Winter Memories under jockey J Lezcano took on Don Lunas and Parting Words in her season opener, and was the first one to hit the wire in that race covering the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 37.27 seconds.
Her second start was at Belmont Park where she ran in the 1 1/16 mile long Grade 2 Sands Point on 30 May, 2011, where she defeated the favourite Celestial Kitten and her Appalachian rival Parting Words, completing the distance in 1 minute and 42.61 seconds.
Winter Memories went to win three races in a row, and at three different venues, and this time she was at Saratoga in the all important Grade 2 Lake George at about 1 1/16 miles on 27 July.
James Toner would have loved Winter Memories to have won the Grade 2 Lake Placid also at Saratoga, but Winter Memories couldn’t do much about the competition, as Hungry Islands swept past rivals to win the race convincingly.
Winter Memories is going into the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, with a win in the Grade 1 Garden City at Belmont Park on 17 September, 2011.
The work ahead of the race has been good as she galloped five furlongs at the Keeneland training track, and she has been shipped to Keeneland without any problem, so everything is looking good for Winter Memories.
