Winter Memories trained well to take part in her next race in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga turf
The 3-year-old James Toner trained filly, Winter Memories, is ready for the $150,000 Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes held at Saratoga on 21 August, 2011.
The daughter of El Prado won the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes by an impressive 4 ½ lengths on Saratoga turf, over at a distance of 1 1/16 miles.
Under jockey Jose Lezacano, the roan filly spurted clear of her competition to cover the distance in a fast 1 minute and 41.57 seconds on 27 July, 2011. The win in the Lake George was the filly’s fifth win in six career starts.
On 8 August, 2011, Winter Memories started her training session for her next Saratoga fixture, the Lake Placid Stakes, and she went on to record her first breeze since her run in the Lake George Stakes at Saratoga last month.
Her exercise rider was her usual jockey, Jose Lezcano, and the pair started off breezing and went five furlongs in the first go. They completed the distance in 59.29 seconds over at the Oklahoma turf.
Jockey Jose Lezcano, then took the filly for her final three furlongs and the pair showed progress when they completed the run in 34.72 seconds.
According to trainer James Toner, he just wanted the filly to go about five furlongs as her routine work out for the day, especially when she hasn’t run after her win in the Lake George, but when the filly got waiting around there it was evident that she
would go fast in another round.
Jose Lezcano didn’t clamp her down, instead he allowed the filly do to her own thing, and he was just enjoying the ride not telling her to do anything. Winter Memories looked anxious to be out and breezing and in that state horses usually go all out.
James Toner, who also trained Winter Memories mother, Memories of Silver, and he also went on to win the Lake George Stakes with her mother too, about 15 years ago.
The 3-year-old filly, Winter Memories has made all her starts on turf, and she has done exceptionally well over at a distance of 1 mile and 1 1/16 miles.
