Winter Memories will be looking to get back on winning ways when she takes on outstanding field of 3-year-old fillies in the Garden City Stakes
The 3-year-old filly, Winter Memories has been in prolific form in the 2011 season, bagging three graded stakes' races along the way will have her work cut out for her in the Grade 1 $250,000 Garden City Stakes at Belmont Park on 17 September, 2011.
In the field of nine 3-year-old fillies, the cast of Garden City Stakes has won nine graded stakes and an unbelievably talented field will vie for the Grade 1 victory at Belmont Park this weekend.
Trained by James Toner for Phillips Racing Partnership, Winter Memories was handed her first defeat of the season in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga on 21 August, 2011, where under jockey J Lezcano, the filly rolled in 4th.
It was her first career start on 1 1/8 miles, and prior to the Lake Placid, she has been running on distances ranging from 1 mile to 1 1/16 miles.
Hungry Island, Kathmanblu and Dynamic Holiday were the top three in the Lake Placid, over Saratoga’s turf course, with the winning time of 1 minute and 53.77 seconds.
Previously, Winter Memories had 3 starts this season, and she was 3 of 3 with victories in Grade 3 Appalachian at Keeneland on 21 April, 2011, over a mile.
Her second start was in the Grade 2 Sands Point over her favoured distance of 1 1/16 miles, as she went on to win the race at Belmont Park on 30 May, 2011.
It was time to up the tempo, as the season grew older the races became tougher, and it was time for Winter Memories to show her grit and stamina, as she went on to bag another Grade 2 race, the Lake George Stakes at Saratoga.
It was a rollicking start by the talented filly, and by now she had won 3 races out of 3, but lost the plot in the Lake Placid over a longer stretch.
This time around, she will be again tested in the Garden City, over a similar distance as that of Lake Placid Stakes, 1 1/8 miles.
Winter Memories will take on the Lake Placid Stakes' winner, Hungry Island, and the runner-up, Kathmanblu. With top class entries, the Grade 2 Garden City Stakes may turn out to be an interesting race.
