  1. At 2 a child is only interested in short term activities and not into social activities with peers.  I would keep it a family affair or very close friends.  Have a birthday cake made out of cupcakes for easier serving and to eat (finger food).  If you need games, play simple games like musical pillows (chairs you can fall off), carry the beans to the bowl, letting kids ran back and forth, spilling, at the end see who has the most in the measure cup (so you don't have to count).

A child that age does not realize what a birthday party is, rather that the child gets food and presents to open (their priorities).

  2. When my daughter turned 2 or 3 (in February) I invited over a bunch of kids around her age from the daycare and handed them all light plastic shovels and we piled some snow in the backyard, made tunnels and the kids used a little toboggan to slide down their hill (I had pre-shovelled much of the snow into a mound).  After the snow play the kids came in had some hot chocolate and a piece of cake.  It was very fun and involved little mess.
