Question:

Winter bridesmaid dresses. What do you think?

It gets rather cold here (down to -35 with wind chill, etc) So I was thinking of something with a jacket if they`re cold inside as well.

I also really don`t want to get them prom type of dresses because they`re not the type that would wear them again. So I want to get them something that`s soft and can be worn again for other occasions. What do you think of these (in dusty rose or violet)?

Do you think they`re dresses that can be worn again for other occasions?

Also if I got these for them, what color would the bouquets be?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

  1. Well not being mean but I feel sorta bad for your bridesmaids.

    Again depends on their age.

but i would say get a more flatting dress and use a cover up. like this one

Also for wedding bouquets I am not sure about your wedding colors...

  2. Those dresses are awful, unless your bridesmaids are 50 or older, and even then, they still may hate them.

Get the dress you want. Then ask someone you know that crochets to make wraps to match. Like with the green and black dress link you showed, I'd do a black wrap. I don't mean like the little sheer prom dress wraps, I mean something handmade that's thick and going to keep their arms warm. They will be plenty warm inside. It's getting from here to there that they need to warmth.

I was going to have someone crochet wraps for my bridesmaids, but I somehow got incredibly lucky and found crocheted wraps in the exact color for $1 at the Dollar Tree! They covered their chest and arms and looked incredibly classy, believe it or not. The girls loved them and didn't believe me when I told them they were $1! They didn't wear them down the aisle, but if you really wanted them to, they could.

  3. Absolutely magnificent would be any of the floor-length options on the following site:  http://www.ariadress.com/DressThumbnails... .

  4. I do not like those dresses at all! It look like something my MOM would wear!

I know it will be cold but you can get some dresses that look better then the ones u pick!

  5. You have the right idea with the jacket.  With a winter as cold as that, it's going to look silly to have anything besides ling sleeves.   However, those are really ugly dresses.  The part that is the problem is the layering.  It's distracting.  It would look bad in photos, too, as the layering part would fight against the flowers they would be holding at waist height.  And don't worry about getting something they will wear again.  It is an old joke that Bridesmaids won't wear the dress again.  Watch the movie "27 dresses".

  6. I agree with Elle Z, unless they are more 'mature' bridesmaids then I would go with something else....this looks more like for older women...if that is the case then it will probably work out..I like the darker color with a lighter color bouquet...

If your bridesmaids are younger...they probably won't wear them again...

These dresses look like they are made out of chiffon..very light fabric and they will still get a chill...satin or velvet would be warmer...

Do you have a 'theme' or color theme for your wedding?

    maybe something like this....

  7. They aren't horrible dresses - but I have to agree with the first answer in that my mother probably wouldn't even wear them as they are a little out-dated.  How old are your girls?  I don't mean any offense to you - but I am only 22 and would not want to wear that again if I were your bridesmaid.

Here are some ideas similar to yours that are just a bit more 'elegantly timeless' as I like to put it... and they should be nice and warm too if it gets too chilly...

As for flowers - soft pink flowers would go lovely with either colour you gave us.

Edit - being that your girls are 'larger' then I still think the dresses I have given above (except maybe the very last one) would be perfect for them.  The best thing to do (if you can) is to go with them and try on some dresses and jackets and see what you like... (and what they like!)

Edit 2 - sorry - I just can't find anything else that is cheaper.  All I can suggest is that you go find some nice dresses then go buy a jacket elsewhere that will match - something just a bit plainer than what you chose would be lovely.  If you know someone who can sew that may be even cheaper?  (It doesn't cost much to buy a pattern for a bolero jacket and you will just have to buy the material then to suit the dresses)

  8. i agree with the 1st answer.

  9. i don't like the dresses

  10. Yes, I agree with all the others.  I'm 52 and those would be something I would POSSIBLY (and I stress....possibly) consider wearing.  They are not appropriate for a bridesmaid dress at all.  Keep looking.

  11. How old are your bridesmaids?  That dress looks very mature.  I would find a dress and then look for a cover option, like a shrug, or shawl, or even a bolero jacket.

  12. Well, it's great that you are considering your party.  Can you ask them to send you images of gowns they think they would like so that you can get a good idea?

Also, if it will be heated wherever you are, you could all wear overcoats or peacoats in between the ceremony/reception.  The gown itself doesn't necessarily have to have a jacket.  If you wanted something, a shawl looks graceful but still adds extra warmth.

Or since they have different body types, maybe choose a color and let them purchase the gowns?

The thing with the first ones you linked are that they aren't necessarily "wear again" dresses, which is what you wanted in the first place.
