Winter classic on chrismas or new year's day?

Christmas should be a time for family.  New Years Day should be a day for sports.

If your talking about the one being played in Chicago 2009, then it is officially going to be played New Year's Day.

That is definitely better than Christmas day since most people are busy on this day with "family get togethers" and such.

There is a long standing agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA that there will be no games played on Christmas Day. To change even a novelty game like the winter classic would require opening up the CBA to negotiations and neither side would want to do that.

Therefore for the time being all winter classics will be on New Years Day opposite the BCS Bowl games.

How this is going to increase viewers in the US is beyond me.
