Hi guys, I'll be travelling to South Africa, the Kalahari Desert in about 2 weeks time.

As I live near the equator, I have no concept on how to dress for winter let alone winter in a South African Desert.

Can anyone please help me?

  1. I have no idea. Google it.

  2. Yes, like cakes said:

    Dress like an onion.

  3. Kalahari temperatures in winter can be as warm as 25 °C or even below zero and freezing at night.  So it is rather difficult to decide what to wear.  A few short sleeve t-shirts or shirts with long sleeves that can be rolled up. A pullover and a light jacket.

I suggest that you adopt the layered look. Take many lighter pieces of clothing rather than one huge heavy jacket.  You can put on as many layers to keep warm, and have a good windproof jacket over it all.  It will be easier to take off or add a piece of clothing should you feel hotter or colder. Perhaps a cap and scarf and gloves should you be outdoors in the early morning or late evenings, when it will be chillier.

And good comfortable shoes that can also accommodate a pair of socks should your feet feel too cold..

Here is a site that gives the climate :

  4. i agree with cakes - be prepared for nice warm weather as well as for cold (especially at night).

check http://www.wunderground.com/ - you can get forecasts and weather history for almost any place. upington (in RSA) and keetmanshoop (in nam) could be interesting.

enjoy your stay - I'm going to Namibia in 5 weeks myself and I know I'll enjoy it ;-)

  5. I just got home from that part of the county. To be honest if the sun goes down you get cold. I had a nice thick jacket on and sat right next to the fire to keep the heat up. Diring the day temps are nice 25-28`C. Hope you enjoy it.

    Where are you going exactly?

  6. Another basic thing that one should know, tj101, is not to open your ignorant trap, if you are a clueless poepol.

  7. KALAHARI IS NOT IN SOUTH AFRICA!! My GOD, this is just some of those basic things one should know. kalahari is botswana

  8. tj101 - man you are a poepol - Nice one Blouspook - some people should go loose themselves in the desert and do us all a favour...

Was in KIMBERLEY at the Kalahari Lodge (yes that is in South Africa) - last week (eating Lamb Chops - lol - Hennie) - and the daytime temperature was about 27C - but the morning / night time temperatures were just above 5C - which is relatively mild for this time of year - I have previously been there were it was -3C - which for us South African is flippin cold ---

So 2 types of clothing is going to be required - Have fun it, in it's own unique way it is very beautiful out there - -
