Winter yes/no italy in venice tourist?

I visited Italy in summer many years ago, and again last Dec-Jan. I much preferred my winter visit; it was not crowded, and it was no colder than winter in my hometown of Sydney, Australia. However, Venice was the coldest city we visited, but it was the only city where I needed to wear woollen hat AND gloves.

We stayed in a hotel on the Lido - less than 100 euro a night for 3 people with a great breakfast included. It was called the Villa delle Palme. The vaporetto trip across the lagoon was wonderful and cheap; we stayed on the vaporetto and went right around the Canal Grande. etc etc

Winter in Venice was wonderful!

Let me put it this way---

Summer is better if you 're loaded---Lira I mean !

Venice was one of the most expensive tourist spots in

Europe when I was there---several different years---and

the most crowded !

Then I went in the winter ---and enjoyed it more---hotels

( your main expense ) were still not cheap but at least

more available and affordable---and you could enjoy

walking around more because it wasn't so crowded--

there's really not much to see or do unless you have

a nice companion ( don't take the children )

The canal odor was more subdued---the waiters and

others were more friendly and attentive ( you can

imagine why )

All in all I think you'll enjoy it more !

"Don't come here now !---the Streets are full of water ! "

Winters in Venice are a bit cool and sometimes rainy.  The upside is that the afre is cheaper because it is off-season and hotels are easier to book.  There are far less crowds as well.

Winter is generally good for a visit to Venice. There can be some days with fog which makes for good pictures. There are some days with flooding, but many hotels have boots for guests and there are raised walkways put out to get around. The water drains when the tides go out again.

There's a Christmas market in Campo San Stefano that's worth visiting in December. It's not as big as the ones in Trento or Bolzano, but they usually have some good crafts and food.

One nice thing about the winter in Venice is that there are stands where you can get vin brule to warm up.

Everything is open and there are not huge crowds like there are in the summer.

winter is fine in venice...it becomes a different world than in warmer seasons.  

piazzas may be snow covered -- beautiful!!!!  don't worry about  high waters...the city puts down boardwalks & you should wear boots & have an umbrella.  

take warm clothes.  even tho it is not high season, hotels may be booked up for holidays so plan accordingly....you will have a wonderful time!!

Of course it is much different. Winter is not warm and not always sunny but more and more people appreciate the low season with less tourists and better prices. There can also be lovely bright days but you have to be ready to high tide (anyway it lasts a couple of hours, not an entire day). It can be foggy but fog gives a typical view of the city. Venice in the fog is poetic. I'm not saying Winter is better than the good season, just that it is not terrible and that it gives the view of the other side of Venice, not less beautiful than the Venice in the sun.

Winter can be cold and misty but I like Venice in winter. It seems so mysterious and evocative - just the way Venice should be. It is also far less crowded. To really get the most out of Venice you need to walk a fair bit exploring all the little streets and squares.

All in all winter is a good time to go but wrap up warmly.
