  1. I am not sure of the context of your question, but there is a term that started in horse racing where a horse started out in the lead and stayed in the lead for the entire race, winning it.

    The term would then be he ran it "wire to wire" (sometimes also gate-to-wire) or was in the lead all the way. The term has since been applied to victory where the winner was in the lead all the way.

    It indicates a clear victory!
