  1. Excellent sources.  

    One caveat: 'way back when, my dad had a station wagon that had separate brake and directional circuits, and he had to rig a converter to connect to the standard trailer wiring.  I don't know if any late model cars will still have this problem.

    Standard wiring (the 4 conductor connecter) has 1) ground, 2) running lights, 3) left blinker, 4) right blinker.  In a standard trailer scenario, the left and right blinker circuits are also the brake lights.  If the brake/blinker circuits on the car are separate, you can cause shorts in your car's electrical system without some sort of conversion kit.

    My father-in-law bought a trailer that was hard-wired for this setup.  He kept blowing fuses, so he stopped plugging it in.  He also forgot to mention this to me when I borrowed the trailer...  grrrrrr!  Several blown fuses later, I spent an hour and rewired the trailer correctly.
