Wired, but no IP address detected

When my friend connects a USB cable to his Xbox 360, it says wired, but there is no IP address. Any advice?

Is that USB from the modem?  Try using Eithernet (network) cable from your modem (or router) instead.

USB plugged into what?  Plugging a USB cable into an Xbox and dangling the other end out the window doesn't work.  More NFO plz.

What devices are connected???

You need to plug it into your router using an ethernet cable (Cat5 or better cable with RJ-45 connectors at each end). USB is not for connecting to the internet.
