Question:

Wired or wireless desktop to wireless N router?

We just bought a NetGear Wireless N router. We have a desktop connected to the router with an ethernet cable. I was wondering if the desktop is taking full advantage of the speed from the router, or if a Wireless N adaptor is needed for full speeds? Thanks

  1. If you are wired, you will always and I do mean ALWAYS be faster than N wireless or anyother wireless!   Just remember wires beat wireless for speed - always.. Don't believe me?  Check this report from APPLE on the N stations!

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/...

I picked this report cause it has a very easy to read graph that compares gigabit ethernet - fast ethernet and N and G!

If you are wired, stay wired.  If you use wireless then by all means get a wireless N adapter so you can use the full speed. (Do understand that if you connect a G device to the N router - you will only get G speeds! Just one G item even though others are N and you get G speeds!!!)

Lots of networks. Lots of tests. Lots of routers!

  2. Yes You better have N nic card installed in your desktop too,or eles it will connect to G or B card but you do not get the maximum transfer rate that N supposed to have the most you will  get is the most not maximum G transfer rate I think its about 45 mbs or less...

If you have your desktop connected via Cat5 cable keep it that way ,Don't forget Wireless connection is not reliable lots of times not even stable...
