Question:

Wired to wireless networking?

I have an existing wired network already set up: namely a cable internet connection into a netgear 4 port router, to which is connected 2 pcs and a wii. One of the pcs is an HTPC, and so i would like to keep that connection as wired. is there anyway to add wireless functionality to the network? i would like it so none of the pcs have to be on in order to access the network wirelessly from the wii or a laptop.

  1. The answers above are allright - buy a router, set up a wireless network , pc can be still wired if you prefer. My only advise, becouse you want to connect a wii, so I assume you're interested in playing games online - buy smth with good speed (they are market as G, G+, N) take the netgear rangemaster N - it will be powerfull enough to carry the conection for couple devices with very good speed. If u want to use a dongle (adapter) to make your pc wireless u need to remember that they need to be compatibile with your router speed (so with G speed router you need to have G speed dongle an so on)

    Hope it makes sense:)

  2. You will need to buy a wireless router. You then make it the main internet access point in your house. You can then plug your wired computer into the back of it or make it wireless enabled buy buying a USB wirless adaptor (or dongle). They are about £25. The nintendo Wii has built in wireless capability so that will be fine.

You only need to have the computer or Wii that you wan't to use for the internet on. A wirless router is a standalone unit.

*when buying a wireless router, make sure you get a modem/router as opposed to just a router (to make it standalone)*

  3. This is not complicated. Simply buy a wireless acces point, and plug it into your router. Even given the time involed to travel to your local PC shop, buy hte hardware, and drive back - it'll take you less than an hour.

It won't afffect your wired connections at all.

  4. get yourself a wireless router, most of them will come with the ports on the back to connect with wires but also work with wireless and will not need the pc's to be on
