Question:

Wireless Connection OK- No Internet Service?

I setup my wireless router and adapter yesterday. I have an excellent signal strength, so they are reading each other. However, I cannot connect to the internet. Internet Explorer, Safari and Itunes all show no connection. I can connect when I plug into my modem directly though. Is there some kind of configuring that I need to do to IE or something else?

  1. The router is connecting to your system(s) LAN (local area nettwork) but may not be connected to a WAN (wide area network = internet).  There should be an ethernet cable that runs from your router to your modem (cable, DSL, satellite).  If that's connected the WAN or Internet light on your modem should be lit and either steady or flickering (not blinking steadily).  Some internet service providers (ISP) use "MAC" filtering and the device may need to be authorized on their system or may require login authentication (username and password).

    1) Make sure the internet connection is active by plugging your computer directly into the modem.

    2) Plug your router back in and go to the router's setup page (check your manual) to check the connection status.

    3) Call your ISP and find out if they need to do anything specific to allow the device (add the MAC, PPoE setup information, etc.) or have you setup a username and password.

    Hope that helps.

  2. Check the IP address you're wireless is pulling.  If it's 169.254.x.x you've got the wrong WEP/WPA key.  Just retype in the key and it should work.
