Question:

Wireless Connection problems?

Hi. I can access the internet from my desktop computer, but am unable to wirelessly connect to the internet with my Wii and Xbox360. (And I've been able to in the past, obviously.) What can I try? I'd rather not deal with tech support in Bangladesh.

  1. Hello -

Ok, if I understand your dilemma properly, you have your own personal computer and it can connect to the Internet just fine.  Is it a laptop (using wifi?) or is it a desktop and you're connected to your router with an ethernet cable?

If I were working on your system, the very first thing I'd do would be to power cycle your router.  Meaning, find your router, pull the power plug, count to about 5, and plug it back in.  I call this little move "simulating a power outtage".

Since it sounds like you have a wireless network, you might have two devices, router AND modem.  If resetting the router doesn't do it, I'd then reset the modem.  If you do that to both devices, and you still don't have a connection, I'd be checking your wireless settings because if you try all the above stuff, and your own personal computer stil connects fine, yet your Wii and Xbox don't, then it would sound like a setting or two might have changed on your router.

So if that's the case, go into your router settings and verify the following:

    1.  Name of wireless network (SSID)

    2.  Encryption used, if any (WEP, WPA, etc.)

    3.  What the encryption key is (it's picky, jot it down correctly)

Then go into the network settings for the Wii and the Xbox and verify everything matches.

On my own wi-fi connection, I have one desktop, two laptops, an Xbox 360, and a Nintendo Wii all using the same network, and it works just fine.  Encrypted as well.

Hope this helps!  Good luck!  If you have any other info that might help here, add an additional detail.  I'll keep an eye out here.
