I've setup a new wireless network. i can get my itouch to connect and browse the internet no problem. and i can get my laptop to connect with no problem whatsoever, but when i load up internet explorer it asks for a username and password.

i havn't setup a Username on my wireless router, just a password. i've tried just entering the password, and i've also tried putting in the Name of my Wireless network and the password. but it doesn't work.

i have a NetGear WGR614 Wireless Router and it uses 'Virgin Broadband Wireless Manager'.

how can i solve this problem?

  1. that is unusual.

    solution 1:

maybe try going to control panel. double-click Internet options. click Connection tab. click LAN settings button. make sure you are not going through a proxy, that could be making it prompt you for a password.

    solution 2:

don't use internet explorer. download and install firefox http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ for your web browser. burn the software to a CD-R/CD-RW from another computer since you won't be able to download it from the password prompting computer.

  2. Are you sure your laptop is actually trying to find an internet page, or has it defaulted to the admin page of the router. Try going to control panel/internet options and setting the default page manually to www.google.com

Click accept and close the window, then start IE again.

  3. Have you tried entering your Virgin Broadband user name and password. Once you enter this and log on you can select it to stop asking you to log on all the time.
