Question:

Wireless - PC working fine, Mac not working even though receiving signal?

We have wireless and our router is in the basement. I'm getting signal and the internet is working fine for me, btw my computer is a HP Pavilion. My sister's laptop is a mac and even though she is getting signal, whenever she attempts to go online, it always displays "Address Not Found," even for simple sites like google. The only way she can get internet is plugging in her laptop into the router through an ethernet cord. What could be the problem and how could I fix it? I thought it was the security because I secured it with WPA2-PSK [AES], but I made it unsecured for a couple minutes to see if it would still work, and it didn't. Oh and our router is a Netgear WPN824.

  1. Some routers cannot. Double check the model on the mfg web site. Some routers WILL NOT WORK with MACS.

  2. I don't think the Netgear router is compatiable with Macs.

  3. it shouldn't be your router. i had a netgear for my laptop and it worked fine. however, i had a similar issue with my mac when i used it at work. full signal strength but no connection. the problem was that i was not getting an ip address. go to system preferences>network and click on the 'airport' connection. it should say if you're getting an ip address. if you're not click the proxy tab and see if your sister has any proxies checked off. that will prevent you from getting a connection or ip address. just uncheck or delete the proxies and that should clear everything up.
