Question:

Wireless Router meets Cox Hi-Speeed....HELP!!?

I recently switched my internet service from Pixius communications (satelite internet) to Cox Cable internet. When I plugged in my internet to my wireless router, however, I can't seem to get a signal. Is it possible that the router is not compatible with the cable internet? Is my router out dated? Is it just old and worn out? Do I need to log into my router and change the settings? I don't mind getting a new one, but I don't want to spend the $50 if I don't have to.

The router is a Lynksys WRT54G V5

Thanks!

  1. You have to follow a few steps -- Cox does some wierd stuff to prevent anyone from getting access.

    1. unplug your cable modem

    2. reset your router to it's default settings (hold reset 10 sec, unplug/replug while holding reset, hold for another 10 sec)

    3. open up the config page for your router (see directions or call linksys support) and figure out how to enable "MAC Cloning".  You need to enter the MAC address from your computer into the router so that Cox thinks you don't have a router.  This is how they allow/block access.

    4. Set up security on your wireless connection

    5. unplug the router and wait 10 seconds

    6. plug in both the cable modem and router

    7. make sure it's connected.

Now you should have internet through your router.  If you get a new router, Belkin makes one that's $39 and has a CD that will do all the setup for you so it works right away.  That's what I use.

If that doesn't work call Linksys and they should be able to help you set it up so that it does work.  Don't call Cox.  You may need a new router (or software update) if it doesn't support MAC Cloning.

    EDIT:

yea, as someone else said Cox wants to be paid for every computer you have...and don't like routers.  If you do get them to set up wireless they'll make you buy their equipment and charge you extra per month.

  2. Find out what protocol Cox uses (DHCP vs. PPPoE).  If your new service uses a different protocol than your old service, you'll need to change settings in the wireless router.

  3. I used to have COX & they are real bitchy about routers on their system, I had to buy a Netgear router that does not need permission from cox to work properly.

It has 1 Internet input (ethernet)

    & 4 LAN outputs (ethernet)

& of course it's also wireless.

The problem with COX is that they want to get paid for every computer hooked up, Thats why they dont like routers & they have a block on that sort of thing. The Netgear is invisable to them & they wont know its there.
