  3. How to enable the Actiontec wireless feature

Open your Web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, FireFox, Safari etc.)

The Actiontec modem configuration interface will appear.

    Select Setup / Configuration.

Select Advanced Setup in the left column.

Select Begin Advanced Setup in the center of the page.

Select Wireless Settings in the left column.

    Find Wireless and select On.

Find Security and select WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol.)

    Select Next.

Next to the field labeled Key 1, leave the default value at 64 bits.

Create a WEP key using any 10-digit combination of numbers 0 to 9 and letters a through f. (e.g., ab cd ef 12 34 or 1a 2b 3c 4d 5e)  Be sure to write down your selected WEP key as you will need it for the other computers you are networking.

For help with enabling the wireless on your computer, please consult your computer documentation or call your computer manufacturer.

  4. Without totally boring you with technical jumbo...

You need to set up a WEP key.

Depending on who makes your Router/Modem, you will need to log on to the modem, most modems are easy. Go to your browser (Internet explorer, Firefox, etc) Type this into the line 192.168.1.1

Most likely this will let you log on. Now use admin/admin or admin/password, usually those are default. After logging on find the setting for wireless and enable WEP, enter your password. You will have to set this up on your computer as well.

Another note, if you don't use the wireless, just disable it...

If you run into any problems, just contact your manufacturer of the Modem they should be able to walk you through it...

  5. Step 1 - get the name and model number of your wireless router off the router nameplate. Then go to the manufacturers website and download the manual. It will give you the model specific details.

Here are the general steps to follow

    1. Connect to the router using an Ethernet cable. Do not use wireless for this

    2. Using your browser, enter the IP address of the router (double-click on your network icon in the system tray and click the support button. The IP address you use is the "default gateway", usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)

    3. Enter the user name and password from the manual (usually admin & "blank", admin & admin, or admin & password)

    4. You are now in the router setup pages. Go to the section for Wireless Setup

    5. Click the button Enable Wireless security. Select WPA encryption (WPA has been hacked)

    6. Enter a strong password for the "Network Key" (a strong password is a random mix of numbers, letters and special characters) - WRITE IT DOWN

    7. Give your router a unique name (SSID)

    8 Save your settings

9 Go to the router administration page. Change the user name and password from default -WRITE IT DOWN AND save your settings

10 Log off the router, unplug your Ethernet cable and restart it by disconnecting power, waiting and powering it up

    11. Now using your wireless connection, scan the wireless networks and find the network with the name you chose

    12. Double click on your network, and rnter the Network Key

You are back in business and the network is secure

  6. Go next door and threaten her with your tongue.  You might get lucky and marry her.

Set up WPA-PSK on your router.  Stop broadcsting the SSID.  That will stop her.  Then she will come over, make love to you in exchange for router access.   OH Darling, let me see your router! Oh MY, how big it is!!!
