Question:

Wireless can't connect to network?

I am using a linksys router and have been using it without a problem for 2 months. Suddenly I logged in today and my wireless was not working. I've had to resort to plugging a cable directly into my laptop to get online. I'm running 32-bit Vista and have no idea why it's acting up all of a sudden. I restarted my laptop once and it has not solved the problem. Any ideas as to what's happened and what I can do to fix it?

  1. My observation has been, the WAP component, of Linksys routers, are set to channel 6, by default.  Therefore, if somebody, e.g., a neighbor, also set up a Linksys router, without changing the channel.  The two routers would interfere, with each other.  This is a common problem, in apartments, and dormitories.

Consider, setting your router to another channel; it may clear up the problem.  There are eleven channels, choose another at random.  You only need to change the router, not any of the connecting computers.

  2. I have the same router and I'm having problems where I get five bars and it SAYS it's "not connected" but I can still use the internet, without a cable though. But it'll disconnect itself preodically. I have no idea what's going on and would like some help too.

  3. Try repowering wireless network router too.

Also make sure cable from router to MODEM is in properly and snug.

  4. if you googled it im hoping you came to the answer "unplug it and plug it back it" and if not you should do that.  another thing to try is to see if it will let you access the router settings.  some routers, depending on how well protected they are, will let users access their settings with a password and not even be connected to their network.  most routers have a default IP of 192.168.0.1 but for security reasons this is sometimes different.  check your manual if you can't guess what it is (another good one to guess is 192.168.1.1, they will always be 192.168.x.x for wireless).  The way you access this is you open a browser and tpye the number where you would type a web address.  If nothing else works there should be a tiny button somewhere on the back of the router.  It might be labeled factory reset, it might not.  Factory reset erases everything in your router and puts it back the way it was when you got it.  if you can get access to the routers settings page you should try telling it to update firmware once you're in.
