Wireless connection, what do I need to know?

Is there anything technical I need to know to link a desktop computer to wireless connection.

When I brought the computer, I remember the guy in the shop stating I would need a dongle for the computer.

I now have internet (wireless in the house, BT), and need to link it to the computer, via a dongle.

Is there anything that may catch me out?

Isn't a dongle an encryptor? Basically, you can connect to internet even without this.

the dongle is just a little stick you plug into your computer so it recieves the wireless from your BT home hub thing.they are like £20

I don't know what is meant by a dongle other than a wireless card in the pc.
