I'm hoping to find a reasonable rate for interenet access at work in a private home that will not allow me access to their computer hook-up.I used Verizon's newest card for 39.95/mo.,but was unable to get enough usage time,& I can't afford the upgrade to 69.95/mo. Any ideas?

About the only alternative is use a hot spot for a wireless connection.  McDonalds and Starbucks are two you can try.  Some of the other coffee shops have access.  May have to go to different ones so they don't cut you off for exceeding the limits they have set.
